Kapisillit and Qoornoq Excursion in Godthåbsfjorden: A Cultural and Historical Fjord Experience
Discover Kapisillit and Qoornoq on a boat tour from Nuuk with local history, guided visits, and stunning nature in Nuuk Fjord.
This excursion combines cultural-historical insights with scenic nature experiences in the region surrounding Nuuk. The tour begins with a boat journey to the settlement of Kapisillit, where participants, together with a crew member, take part in a short introductory walk through the village.
During the visit to Kapisillit, participants are introduced to key points of interest, including the local church and other features that reflect the character of the settlement as a small fishing community. Kapisillit also includes basic community infrastructure such as a school and kindergarten and serves as a seasonal base for recreational activities, including hunting during the autumn season. Please note that the local store has limited opening hours; therefore, bringing a packed lunch is recommended.
Subject to ice and weather conditions in the fjord, the tour continues across to Qoornoq, a former fishing settlement that is now primarily used as a summer residence area. In Qoornoq, a guided interpretation is provided, focusing on Greenland’s modernization process and the socio-economic changes associated with the centralization of the fishing industry. Particular attention is given to historical challenges, such as shifts in fish stocks and their impact on local livelihoods.
The visit to Qoornoq also includes the local church and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding fjord landscape. Following the visit, participants are transported back to Nuuk by boat.
As a general framework, approximately one hour is allocated to each settlement, ensuring a well-structured and balanced excursion.
